She gave us lots of information about the rays and what we were going to be seeing as well as what to look for. They explained to us the easiest way to get in the water and how to handle ourselves in different situations. As soon as it was time, they quickly got everything ready and we were able to snorkel. We boarded the boat early enough that we were able to hang out and watch the sunset in the bay. And the group is limited to six, unlike other companies, which makes it a lot easier to get help or have questions answered. They provide wetsuits and snorkel gear, as well as wraps that secure around your ankles to keep you afloat. The staff are amazing! They quickly put my mind at ease. Needless to say, my nervousness quickly went away. I decided to book the 630 pm snorkel, knowing that the sun would still be up enough to see when I would have to get in the water-yes, I was nervous going into this. I booked my nighttime manta ray snorkel online, which was about as easy as it gets for booking a tour-you can even sign your waiver online, so all you have to do is show up. Bring your Go-Pro!ĭefinitely will do the tour again next time we stay on the Big Island. To top it off, our guide gave excellent information on the area and the mantas, knowing most of them by name (each is identifiable by unique markings on its body). We had close-up views of about 7-8 mantas! Truly amazing. What makes it even better is that My Kona Adventures has a great relationship with the other tour operators, and they all work together to create a long line of lights.more light=more plankton=more manta encounters. We had the first tour of the evening, so it wasn't quite dark yet, but we did get a nice sunset and were treated to a close-up viewing of a Hawaiian green sea turtle.Ībout 20 minutes later, it was dark enough for the plankton to rise up, and the mantas acted like they were at a buffet. The lights shine downward into the water and attract plankton. The way the manta snorkel's work is by having participants hold onto a floating LED platform. Once there, we got a quick but thorough safety brief, and then we hopped into the water. They provided wetsuits (optional) and ankle flotation devices (not optional), and took us on a quick 2-3 minute boat ride to the snorkel location. Not quite sure what to expect, the crew put us completely at ease. We booked a Manta Ray Snorkel tour for the first night of our trip. If you’re on the fence-post about doing it, go ahead and go for it. He moved the group to another spot at one point that had even more light, more mantas. He made sure we were in a great viewing area. We saw so many mantas swimming all around us, under us, in front of us. The crew of Rubin the captain and Dave (spotter-information about the mantas person) was in the water with us the entire time. Peyton was very friendly greeting us helping us in an out of the boat and a lovely person. The boats are coming in and going out and this crew has their work cut out for them. Right from the start meeting Will to get checked in, get wet suits, etc it was great. My Kona Adventures was an awesome adventure and did not disappoint.īoyfriend and I went last night 12-10-23.
